Taiwan machine tool market share in 2019

According to the export declaration data of various customs areas in Taiwan provided by the Data Processing Office of the General Customs Administration of the Ministry of Finance, and according to the statistics of the Taiwan Machine Tool and Components Industry Association (TMBA), the total export of Taiwan machine tools from January to December 2019 was US$3.065 billion. This is down 16.1% from last year. Among them, the export of metal cutting machine tools decreased by 17.4% to US$2.539 billion, and the export of metal forming machine tools decreased by 9.7% to US$526 million. If compared with the previous month, the export value of machine tools in December 2019 increased by 1.7% compared to November 2019. Among them, the export of metal cutting machine tools decreased by 3%, and the export value of metal forming machine tools increased by 24.2%.

From January to December 2019, the main export models of metal cutting machine tools were integrated processing machines, with an export value of US$1.022 billion, a decrease of 26.1% from the same period last year; lathes ranked second, with an export value of US$621 million, compared with the same period last year. For the export of metal forming machine tools, the export value of forging and press forming machine tools was nearly US$426 million, a decrease of 6.2% compared with the same period last year.

• Drilling/boring/milling/tapping machine tools: Its main export markets are India, Vietnam, and Indonesia, which have performed better. The top 10 exporting countries are, in order: China (including Hong Kong), the United States, India, Vietnam, Thailand, Russia, Malaysia, Turkey, Indonesia, and Italy.
• Grinding machines: The top 10 exporting countries in order are: China (including Hong Kong), the United States, Vietnam, Japan, Germany, Russia, India, Thailand, Indonesia, and South Korea. In the export performance of various countries, Russia's export growth is the most eye-catching, followed by Vietnam.
• Forging, stamping, and forming machine tools: The top 10 exporting countries are China (including Hong Kong), the United States, Vietnam, India, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, and Brazil. Brazil’s main export markets have the most robust market demand, while Japan and Mexico also performed well.
• Planing/inserting/pulling/tooth cutting machine tools: The top 10 rankings are the United States, China (including Hong Kong), Japan, Thailand, the Netherlands, Australia, Vietnam, Germany, Russia, and South Korea. The growth markets for this export were Thailand and Germany, while exports from South Korea and China (including Hong Kong) declined more.
• Other forming machine tools: The top 10 exporting countries are: China (including Hong Kong), Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, the United States, Japan, Turkey, and Russia. Among the export markets, Malaysia and Japan are showing positive growth, while Russia is the market where exports have fallen more.

Regarding the export volume trend of Taiwan's main machine tool industry products, the cumulative average export of integrated processing machines from 2017 to 2019 was about 1,271 units, and the average export number from January to December 2019 was 979 units. From 2017 to 2019, the cumulative average export of lathe products was about 1,641 units, and the average export number from January to December 2019 was 1,395 units. The average export number of grinder products from 2017 to 2019 was 8801 units, and the average export number from January to December 2019 was 1212 units. If compared with the previous month, the import value of machine tools in December 2019 increased by 18.7% compared to November 2019, of which the total import value of metal cutting machine tools increased by 13.9%, and the total import value of metal forming machine tools increased by 53.4%.

According to the analysis of machine types, the import of metal cutting machine tools ranked first in the discharge, laser, and ultrasonic machine tools. The import value was nearly 251 million US dollars, accounting for 31.1% of the total import value, which was a decrease of 40.4% compared with the same period last year. The importing countries are Japan, China (including Hong Kong), and Singapore; the second-largest import is the comprehensive processing machine, with an import value of 142 million US dollars, accounting for 17.6% of the total import, an increase of 18.7% compared with last year. The main importing countries are Japan, Germany, and China (including Hong Kong).

According to the analysis of importing countries (regions), the top ten countries (regions) of Taiwan machine tool imports from January to December 2019 are Japan, China (including Hong Kong), Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Singapore, South Korea, the United States, Thailand, Austria. Taiwan’s imports of machine tools from Japan accounted for 48% of the total imports, and the import value was US$388 million, down 5.5% from last year. The main imported products are electric discharge, laser, and ultrasonic machine tools; the second largest in China (The import value (including Hong Kong) was US$1.03, accounting for 12.7% of the total imports, down 33.2% from last year.
