Invented 150 years ago in 1869,? the postcard was the quick, new way to communicate. The social media of the day if you will. Cameras, photography and photo processing methods were expensive? or were not easily used by a layman.? Long distance telecommunication was also not readily available. Mail service was timely and in many communities was delivered twice a day. The pictures on a penny postcard brought the world closer for just a 1? stamp for domestic mail and a 2? stamp to send internationally.

Toronto-multiviewIn 1977, ten postcard-collecting enthusiasts established the Toronto Postcard Club. They met once a month in Agincourt (Scarborough).? Since then, the club’s contribution to deltiology in Canada has been significant. In 2017, the Toronto Postcard Club proudly celebrated its 40th year. The Club has hosted an ANNUAL SHOW and SALE since 1971 where our member dealers? facilitate buying, selling, and trading vintage postcards to all in attendance.

some city!jpgWhy collect vintage postcards? Because they are fascinating records of history. Initially, people gravitate to postcards that have a connection to their lives; home towns, occupations, genealogy, places visited. Interacting with other collectors by joining a postcard club expands our postcard knowledge. Things like the different eras of the postcard craze, different kinds of postcards, the impact of international postal regulations, early Canadian photographers and publishers, and more. It’s also a way to see fine examples of the disappearing art of cursive writing.? Come to one of our meetings or attend a postcard show to see for yourself what makes deltiology such a compelling hobby.
